RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

1980 - 1985.
i/ Revisionary Studies under Flora of India Project
Zygophyllaceae and Vitaceae revised for National Flora. 6 new taxa discovered. Biosystematic studies on these families were carried out. Identity and nomenclatural problems in several taxa solved and new combinations proposed.
ii/ Survey :Field surveys in various parts of Rajasthan, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Meghalaya and West Bengal were undertaken.

1985- 1990
Vegetation Survey:
In Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, two most backward and tribal dominated districts of Gujrat along with monitoring and conservation of natural resources on watershed basis and was involved in developing model watersheds in these districts of Gujrat.

1990-2005
State Flora:
Flora of Kerala: Sapindaceae and Vitaceae have been completed for Flora of Kerala.
Flora of Sikkim: Volume I on Monocotyledons has been published. For Dicotyledonous Flora more than 500 species of Leguminosae to Caprifoliaceae, Rubiaceae, Campanulaceae and Ericaceae have been completed.
Grasses of Sikkim: Grasses of Sikkim have been completed.

Survey:
Sikkim with one of the most difficult terrains in the world ranging in altitude from ca 250 m (ca 750 feet) to above 8000 m (> 26,000 feet) and having one of the most diverse flora in our country, has been extensively and intensively surveyed; resulting in collection of more than eight thousand plant specimens including several interesting plant records for Sikkim and India. Around fifty plant species have been added to the known angiosperm flora of the state.

(a) Details of professional training and research experience (with details)
(i) Worked as Junior and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Wildlife Sciences,
Aligarh Muslim University under Dr. Asad R. Rahmani in Stork Ecology Project from September 1994 to May 1998. This project was funded by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Under this project I collected data, analysed and written a report besides my Ph.D thesis.

(ii) Participated in a discussion meeting on Animal Behaviour at Mysore University from July 8-10, 1999, organized by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.

(iii) Attended “Satellite Tracking: Applications for Wildlife Research & Management (A Regional Workshop for the Indian Sub-continent)- workshop at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun from 13-19 December 1999. This workshop was jointly conducted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India. As a field demonstration Bar-headed Geese were caught and fitted with GPS based radio transmitters. Also learned about GIS techniques in tracking the birds fitted with transmitters.

(iv) Presented (oral) an abstract titled “Effects of water level changes and wading bird abundance on the foraging behaviour of Black-necked Stork Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus in Dudwa National Park, India” in the Millennium 2000 Wetlands Event in Quebec, Canada from August 5-12, 2000.

(v) Participated in a bird banding training at Great Gull Island, New York, U.S.A. under the guidance of Dr Hellen of American Museum of Natural History and Dr Malcolm C. Coulter, Co-Chair, IUCN/BirdLife International/Wetlands. International, Specialist Group on Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills from 17-20 August 2000. There I trapped, banded and measured Common Terns.

(vi) Participated in the Workshop on the “Field Techniques and Taxonomy for Conservation of Rodents and Insectivores from 22-26 July 2002 organized by Rodentia, Insectivora & Scandentia Conservation and Information Network of South Asia (RISCINSA) ZOO / WILD / CBSG, South Asia, at College of Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University jointly organized by the Zoo Outreach Organization and Knowsley Safari Park, U.K.

(viii) Conducted bird survey in the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President of India’s palace), New Delhi from November 2002 till October 2003. Based on my report steps will be take by the authorities to make waterbodies within the Rashtrapati Bhavan to attract migratory birds during winter. We are also planning to write a book on the birds of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

(ix) Participated in a Black Stork survey (New Odyssey) along with Miroslav Bobek, Lubomir Peske and Khalil Baalbaki of Czech Republic mostly in western Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat from 5-18 December 2003. We were after two Black Storks (Iristu and Altynai) which were fitted with satellite transmitters and reached India after their departure from Siberia in Russia in around October/November 2003.
